How to Submit a Sitemap to Google Search Console

Submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console (GSC) is one of the most important steps in technical SEO. It acts as a direct line of communication between your website and Google, telling the crawler exactly which pages you want to be indexed.

Before you submit anything to Google, you should always test your sitemap XML to ensure it does not contain syntax errors, broken links, or exceed file size limits. A broken file can cause indexing delays.

Step-by-Step Guide

Assuming you already have a generated XML file hosted on your domain (usually at https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml), follow these exact steps:

1. Log in to Google Search Console

Go to Google Search Console and log in with your Google account.

2. Select Your Property

In the top-left corner, click the property dropdown and select the website you want to submit the file for. Make sure you select the correct version (e.g., if your site uses HTTPS, do not select the HTTP version).

3. Navigate to Sitemaps

On the left-hand sidebar, look under the Indexing section and click on Sitemaps.

4. Enter the URL

You will see a section titled "Add a new sitemap." Google already provides the base URL of your property. All you need to do is paste the path to your file (for example, sitemap.xml) into the input field.

5. Click Submit

Hit the Submit button. Google will instantly check if the URL is reachable. If successful, you will see a "Sitemap submitted successfully" popup.

How Long Does Indexing Take?

After submission, the status will likely say "Discovered." This means Google has acknowledged the file but hasn't fully crawled all the URLs inside it yet.

It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days for Google to process the links. Check back later to see the "Success" status and to view exactly how many pages were successfully indexed.
